When it comes to selecting the right fly pattern, everyone tends to have their own approach and preferences. This diversity in choices is particularly noticeable amongst anglers, as each person may favour a different style or technique.
Entomology: Less Emphasis Early in the Season
For me personally, entomology does not play a significant role, especially in the early stages of the fishing season. I tend to focus less on matching the exact insects present and more on practical patterns that have proven effective during these months.
Recommended Patterns for Early Season

Brown Trout Patterns
If you are targeting Brown trout, consider using the following fly patterns:
- March Brown
- Black Pennell Hare’s Ear
- Kate McLaren
- Bibio
- Invicta
- Alexandra (a pattern that was once banned in many locations)
Rainbow Trout Patterns
For Rainbows, I recommend trying:
- Blobs, especially the Tequila Blob
- Cats
- Yellow Dancer
- Booby patterns such as candyfloss or black and green, which are effective early season choices
