Millhall Reservoir Fly Fishing Report: Summer Trout Tactics and Results

Location and Conditions

The fishing session took place at Millhall Reservoir on 15 July 2026.  This was my first time at this venue.  between 5:30 pm and 9:30 pm. Conditions were generally favourable, with light wind, clear skies, and an air temperature of approximately 20°C. Water conditions were recorded as good, although recent warm weather appeared to have reduced the level of fish activity compared with previous sessions.


Flies and Tactics

The primary flies used were size 14 buzzers in black and olive patterns. The setup consisted of a three-fly cast, comprising two black buzzers and one olive buzzer, fished on a floating line using a straight-line approach. The flies were presented largely static, and no significant tactical adjustments were made during the session.


Catch Details

One rainbow trout was landed during the session, weighing approximately 4 lb. There were numerous offers throughout the evening, indicating that fish were responding to the method. However, several takes were not successfully converted, operator error resulting in only one fish being brought to the net.

Reflections and Lessons Learned

The most effective approach was to fish buzzers static, which produced consistent interest from the fish. Despite this, few fish were visibly moving, which may have been linked to the warmer water conditions. For a future session, particularly once the water temperature drops, dry flies should be considered as an alternative method.
