Location and Conditions
The session took place at Threipmuir Reservoir on 09 August 2026. The fishing conditions were challenging, with strong winds and light rain throughout the morning. Water conditions were good, weed is becoming an issue for the west end of the reservoir. But recent reports indicated that the reservoir had been fishing well.
Flies and Tactics
The initial cast used a candyfloss boobie, black Munchkin, and hare’s ear nymph. The setup was later adjusted to include black and white cormorant patterns, while the candyfloss booby remained in use. The flies were generally fished in size 12.
The method used was a three fly cast on a sink tip line, with the boobie positioned on the point and the nymph and Munchkin fished on the droppers. Presentation did not appear to be a decisive factor, and no major tactical adjustments were required during the session.

Catch Details
Three rainbow trout were brought to the net, with several additional fish lost during the session. The fish landed were estimated to be in the range of 1 to 1.5 lb. The session ended earlier than intended when the westerly wind increased to a level that made continuing from the boat unsafe.

Reflections and Lessons Learned
The washing line approach with a three foot sink tip proved effective. No substantial changes were made during the session, although the strength of the wind made it difficult to observe fish behaviour. For future outings, calmer conditions should be prioritised, particularly avoiding mornings that include gusts of approximately 40 mph.
