Location and Conditions
| Location | Threipmuir Reservoir |
| Date and time | 21 July 2026, 5:00 pm–9:30 pm |
| Weather | Light wind, clear sky, approximately 25°C |
| Water conditions | Good overall, although the surface temperature was notably warm. |
| Recent activity | The reservoir had been fishing well prior to the session. |
Flies and Tactics
The primary patterns used during the session were a Candyfloss Booby, a black Muskin, and a Hare’s Ear Nymph, all fished in size 12. The initial approach used a three-fly cast on a 10-foot sink tip, with the Booby positioned on the point and the nymph and Munchkin fished on the droppers.
Presentation did not appear to be the main determining factor. The key tactical adjustment was changing from a 10-foot sink tip to a 3-foot sink tip. This change produced immediate results and suggested that the fish were holding higher in the water than expected.

Catch Details
The session produced two rainbow trout to the net, with several additional fish lost during play. The fish landed were estimated to be in the range of 1 to 1.5 lb. After limited success with the longer sink tip, the change to the shorter 3-foot sink tip resulted in immediate offers. This was notable because the surface water was very warm, yet the fish were not positioned as deep as anticipated.
Reflections and Lessons Learned
The most effective method was a washing-line approach using the 3-foot sink tip. By contrast, the 10-foot sink tip appeared to take the flies too deep and did not produce the same level of interest. Fish movement on the surface was limited, but the response after changing depth indicated that trout were present and willing to take when the flies were presented at the correct level. In cooler conditions, dry flies would be worth trying during a future visit.
